I love the profile and rear view of the 996. If it wasn’t for the ugly-ass fried eggs, I would say that it’s the best looking 911 of all. The later cars have gotten big, and the proportions of the 996 are better than the 993. The 997 comes close, but the 996 has a cleaner look.

Not that I would turn down any 911...

Porches follow the same desirability curve as Jeeps. When a new one comes out, it’s seen as extremely divisive and either rubbish or great. The ones that like the new one sell the previous generation, thus driving the value of them down. The generation that is two or three behind current then moves to be “The last best great one EVARRRRR”, and stops depreciating and starts going up in value due to the increased demand.

We’re seeing that with the 996 now.

I think you’re right, but in my case, I think I’ve started to look at the 996 a bit differently. I’ve always hated the nose (and still do), but I’ve come to appreciate that the car looks pretty damn good from other angles.

I would still rather *own* a different generation, for other reasons, but the 996 does have a lot going for it (and the nose of the later cars isn’t quite so bad).

it has a nice 90's vibe to it - uncomplicated and smooth. its a little off in the proportions for me, but otherwise nice.

I don’t think 996s are appreciating except for the special ones(turbo). I do think lots of people are changing their minds about them.

I totally get the hate for the fried eggs, although I think the newer Turbo ones where they moved the notch up are way better.

that. I mean I know its rear engine but its like they took the car, as perfectly proportioned, and just grabbed its butt and pulled.

Yeah, they improved the fried eggs in the later versions, though they’re still ugly.

I think that they have at least bottomed out though - and the well cared for, more desirable cars have ticked up from that bottom.

996 Turbos were stupid a few years ago - we all should have bought one then, but oh well.

I’ve never minded the headlights on the 996, but I’d put it just behind the 997 which is well behind the 993, 964 and 991 in my book.

T1- 993, 964
3- 991
.......
most other 911's which change ranking depending on my mood.

Well hey now, there’s an interesting Oppo post, rank the 911s from favorite to least.

From a pure looks point of view (including the fried eggs and ignoring performance), I think I might actually have the 993 at the bottom TBH.

I still like the 993, I just like others better. Probably 997, 911, 964, 991, 996, 993?

Ask me tomorrow and I’ll give you a completely different order though.

Yeah, my top 3 don’t really change, but the last 3 swap around a lot - considering only the aesthetics.

Agreed. I love the look of the 996. Even the headlights. It’s so smooth and simple, and that ass is gorgeous.

I think the 996 turbo has better proportions. The less-pointy nose helps a lot:

I agree, the 996 has a great silhouette the taillights are a bit dated in design and of course the fried egg headlights. I like that it’s still on the smaller side for a 911. They look tiny compared to the 991

only if you get the 4s - the normal lower grill on the 993s kinda bug me... but I have no problem with the headlamp shape - I think they loo pretty cool

That’s just a stunning car to me, period. And that’s the best color for it, too - for some reason it works, though I’m not usually a huge silver fan.

The 991 is enormous when you look at it next to an older 911, or if you just look at the rear view, period.

But I do love that big, muscular butt on the 991.

I drove a black one in the beginning of 2002. It’s stuck in my mind as one of the most beautiful machines I’ve ever been able to drive.
